KING'S DAY

November 15, 2006

King's Day in Belgium, a day that - the Van Saksen-Coburgclowns not taken in consideration - has only some importance for a couple of supporters of the tricolored flag.
Many Dutch schools profit from this occassion in an attempt to stimulate the artificial feeling of being 'Belgian' in the many classes.
The subject Belgium was also the topic in the class of my 8 year old child.
The teacher gave every child the task of painting a Belgian flag.
My son refused to execute this task, saying to be Flemish and not a Belgian.
He wanted to paint a yellowblack flag instead but wasn't given permission to do that.

He was forced to paint that awfull tricolored thing, symbol for the artificial nation that imprisons two totally different folks.
But to great consternation and anger of the teacher my son teared his painting in pieces afterwards.
A friend of my son followed with the same act.
My son said that the Flemish people have no king.
As father, I couldn't be something else than very proud of his spontaneous deed !
