I don't know the history of the location if there was industry on that spot somewhere in the past which could have been an indication toward terrainpollution, neither can I take some groundsamples to examinate in a lab. This being the case, I can't determine by myself if the catched rumors are based on truth or not. But knowing that B.I.M (Brussels Institute for Management of the Environment) claims there are about 7.000 polluted sites within the Brussels Capital Region and one of the most heavily polluted sites can be found in St-Jans-Molenbeek (beside some other communes), I found it more than worth to find out if the rumors where true or not.
The rumors say that the commune plans to put a thin layer of earth on the existing groundlayer, good knowing that the terrain is polluted but keeping it wisely secret because cleaning up cost a lot of money that now can be saved. This is of course inacceptable. Mayor of St-Jans-Molenbeek is French socialist Philippe Moureaux. His political Walloon party PS (nicknamed 'The Red Maffia') is widedly known for one scandal of corruption after the other that sees the daylight in the newspapers. So I asked myself : "What if I have discovered a stinkey case here ?". Better to be sure of and digging deeper in this matter.
That's why I toke contact with Vlaams Belang politician Valérie Seyns, member in the Brussels Parlement. She will interrogate about this matter in the Commission of Environment. Now we'll have to wait what the given answer will be to decide if further steps are necessary. To be continued ...
