4th EDITION 'ZOT-VAN-DE-ZENNE'DAY

September 18, 2005

For Brussels, this sunday isn't an ordinairy sunday like all the others. For instance, it's a day where no cars are allowed in the city for the sake of a cleaner environment. But it's also 'Zot-van-de-Zenne' day, 4th edition.
An annuary event with a lot of activities planned throughout Brussels, especially given daylight in the desire to see a more visible and cleaner Zenne in the capital of Flandre and EU.
The Zenne is a river that is an unseparable part of Brussels, just like many other cities can't be disconnected from their own rivers (think at Paris and the Seine River for example).
Yet, the Zenne got through the passing of time the not deserved tragic transformation from a once crucial river towards a underground collector of stinking wastewater.

One of the many activities consisted of a photo-action, collecting as many images as possible of persons who disagree with the way the Zenne is treated. This images will than be put in bocals filled with water from the Zenne. With all these bocals will eventually be build a wall of protest in september of next year on Open Monument Day at Brussels.
Instead of saying "cheese" in the eye of the camera, the participants said loudly "water !" as if all the faces put on photo are screaming in analogy with the underground Zenne-water of our city that desperately wants to see the daylight again.

It's a artistic kind of petition, a project from the hands of Anja Sijben. Goal is to reach a collection of no less than 10.000 bocals for building the wall of protest. I participated in this photo-action because I like to see one day the Zenne-river getting again the former status of well-deserved glory and respect. It will make Brussels more beautiful.
